INdendro: Dendrometer Pilot Study Scaling Up

Over the past few years and supported by the NSF EPSCoR Track-2 project “Leveraging Intelligent Informatics and Smart Data for Improved Understanding of Northern Forest Ecosystem Resilience” (INSPIRES; OIA-1920908) and E-RISE RII project, “Enhancing Maine Forest Economy, Sustainability, and Technology Ecosystem To Accelerate Innovation” (FOREST; OIA-2416915), CRSF researchers have been working to develop low-cost, easy to install sensors to monitor tree growth and health. These dendrometers measure and wirelessly transmit data every half hour, with the ability to pass through vegetation. The project is now approaching the final stages of development, with plans to produce the tree monitoring units at scale in the near future.
