Summer Internships Holt Research Forest
Summer 2021 Forest Ecosystem Field Crew Openings
Onsite housing available. 40 hrs/week, 10-12 weeks, June-August. Hiring for 2-3 positions.
Holt Research Forest (HRF; holtforest.org) is the site of a long-term forest ecosystem study in Arrowsic, Maine (near Bath, Brunswick, Popham and Reid State Parks, < 1 hr. from Portland). Primary task for summer is study area reconstruction, erecting deer exclosures, and tree and regeneration sampling. Knowledge of the tree species of Maine and ability to work independently are essential. Familiarity with tree sampling methods, data collection, measuring tapes, EDMs, compass use and map reading are desirable. Other tasks may include trail maintenance, seed counting, assisting with small mammal trapping, salamander counts, and more.
Since 1983 a team of scientists from the University of Maine and the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests has been researching many aspects of the forest ecosystem. With the support of the Maine TREE Foundation, we are continuing a research program which will include examining the results of a 2020/2021 timber harvest, as well as providing insights into harvest impacts, deer browsing, tree regeneration, and growth rates. In preparation, the study grid and components will be restored and first year post-harvest data will be collected. Third position dependent on funding from Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund.
